Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, & Bryce Dessner- Jupiter

(Plus 7 trombones, 4 strings, & 1 drummer)

From the Planetarium performance collection.

I went to the Walt Disney Concert Hall last night with Tosh to see this performance, it was part of the Brooklyn Concert Series. I’d also seen a band perform as part of the series last Friday, but this knocked that out of the water. It was fantastic. The orb that you see in this video is illuminated by trippy images of planets and moving wave-like images (each song in the performance is about a different planet- they say Pluto was included out of pity). The crescendos like the one you hear in this very short clip were the best part.

As a native Chicagoan, I previously knew Sufjan for his album Illinoise.

Apparently this “may or may not” be recorded as a full album. I hope it does. But more importantly- I hope more artists start to collaborate as effectively as these three talented musicians have. I’ve started exploring some of Nico Muhly’s stuff- he’s a contemporary composer. One of my favorite things about this concert was watching Muhly direct the rest of the ensemble while playing two pianos and a synthesizer thing simultaneously.

P.S. The evening was an adventure. There were cockroaches scuttling around our feet at dinner. The fire alarm blared in the restaurant for about 13 minutes, keeping us from being able to talk. Tosh saved me from being hit and killed by a car that was about to run a red light. And an usher directed us to the wrong section, leading another, angry usher to reprimand us and point out a couple of empty seats for us to take until intermission. At intermission we hopped out of those seats to find our own, just in time for a confused looking couple to take our place in their rightful seats.

Ahhhh Los Angeles.

Man Like That

Gin Wigmore • Man Like That

There’s a 90% chance you’ve heard Gin Wigmore’s song “Don’t Stop” on a commercial- I think it’s for paint? But this is way better than that. I heard her being interviewed on KCRW and the interviewer said her “snarl” sounded somewhat Eartha Kitt-like. I have to agree.

Yet another Kiwi musician- we must have a million now, right? Willy Moon, Kimbra, Flight of the Concords….

ALT-J ∆ - Breezeblocks

I wonder what a breezeblock is.

Do you know where the wilds things go?
They go along to take your honey, la, la, la
Break down now, weep, build up breakfast now
Let’s eat my love, my love, love, love, la, la, la
